The Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. 2009 National Student Production Awards

The Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. also announced the finalists for the 2009 National Student Production Awards. ICTV won the award for Best Newscast & Best Sportscast. ICTV was named a finalist in seven of the categories, including:

  • Best General Entertainment Program: Entertainment 16, Produced by Andrea Teplitsky, Mariel Rubin, and Faryn Shiro
  • Best Promo: ICTV.org, produced by Matt Baldovsky
  • Best Live Sports Production (two finalists): "Bombers Football vs. Frostburg State," produced by Allison Gainza and Ryan Boyce; "Bombers Women's Basketball vs. Stevens," produced by Allison Gainza and Jodi Eisenberg
  • Best Sportscast: Sports Final, produced by Jodi Eisenberg, Dana Matson, Kevin Cartini, and Matt McLaughlin. Sports director: Tom Wrede

Association of Higher Education Campus Televison Administrators (AHECTA) 2009

Busking the Big Apple, a documentary on street performers in New York City, won the grand prize at the Association of Higher Education Campus Television Administrators (AHECTA) 2009 National Student Production contest. The documentary was produced by Chris Cucci, Chris Burt, and Sarah Justine Woodhouse. Three other ICTV programs were recognized with Honorable Mentions by AHECTA, including: Game Over, produced by Dan Hirsch and Natalie Shoemaker; Gourmet for a Day, produced by Allison Gainza and Stu Kenny; and History of ICTV, produced by Bryan Mercer.


NYS Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards - College Television Competition

Newswatch 16 was awarded first place in the college television competition by the NYS Associated Press Broadcasters Association. Newsdirector Bryan Mercer & Producer Becky Goodling were in attendance.


2008 Hometown Video Award - Alliance for Community Media

Bombers Football won a 2008 Hometown Video Award from the Alliance for Community Media for Sports Coverage: Non Professional. This is a national competition recognizing excellence in public access programming.

ICTV was recogized as the overall winner in three categories at the 2008 Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc. Student Production Awards, held this year in Washington, D.C. The winning shows were:

2007 Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc. Student Production Awards
Washington, D.C. - October 2007

Four ICTV shows were selected as top winners at the 2007 Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc. Student Production Awards, held this year in Washington, D.C. The winning shows were:

  • Best Drama: Beyond - 'The Terrible Young Couple'
  • Best Sportscast: Sports Final
  • Best Sports Play-by-Play: 'Ithaca Football vs. Hartwick'
  • Best Special Broadcast: The Race 2, Episode 1

In attendance to accept the awards were Peter Johanns, Manager of TV Operations, and Laurel Mick, Station Manager


New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association: Annual News Competition - College Division
June, 2007

For the third year in a row, ICTV's "Newswatch 16" won Best Regularly Scheduled Local News Program in the College Station competition sponsored by the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association (NYSAPBA). A plaque and $250.00 were awarded at the annual NYSAPBA banquet in Saratoga Springs June 9. The judges commented: "The anchors were by far the best we saw, the team was polished. Newscast was well produced and says: they 'get it'. These folks have a future in the broadcast news business."

The winning entry - March 4, 2007 - was anchored by Ana Liss '07 and Cody Holyoke '07, who also produced. They are now reporting at stations in Elmira, NY and Montgomery, AL respectively. Joe McCormick '09 directed, and Becky Goodling '09 was news director.

The were only two categories in the competition. The other - Best News Story - was won by Fordham University.


Society of Professional Journalist Awards
April, 2007

The Society of Professional Journalists announced the Region 1 Mark of Excellence Award winners for the 2006 calendar year. Collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,300 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions. Region 1 is northeast and mid-Atlantic states.

The honorees were awarded certificates on April 14 during the Spring Conference held at Hofstra University. First place regional winners advanced to the national round of judging, which is currently taking place. National winners will be announced in mid May.

Time Warner PEGASYS Local Cable Access Awards
Ithaca - February 2007

Four Ithaca College Television programs received 2007 Pegasys Awards for Cablecasting Excellence. The February 23 presentation was televised live on Time Warner channel 13 from the downtown cable access studio. This annual competition honors local public and educational access programming. ICTV winners were:

College Media Advisers Apple Award
New York City - March 18, 2006

Newswatch 16, cablecast March 14, 2006 won the College Media Advisers' Apple Award for Television News Broadcasting on March 18. This was an on-site, national competition at the Spring National College Media Convention in New York City.


Time Warner Pegasys Local Access Awards
Ithaca - February, 2006.

Ithaca Time Warner Cable honored ICTV's first ever cartoon, "Unicorn Boy" with two PEGASYS local access awards in February 2006. Unicorn Boy was produced by Peter Berg '07 and Michael Wechsler '07.

Kansas City, MO - October 2005

The five Ithaca finalists for the 2005 Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc. Student Production Awards were all named top winners at the College Media Advisers/Associated Collegiate Press convention Oct. 29 in Kansas City.

ICTV station manager and winning documentary co-producer Matt Antalek was present at the ceremony to accept the awards.

Time Warner Pegasys Local Access Awards
Ithaca - February 11, 2005.

Ithaca Time Warner Cable honored three Ithaca College Television programs from Fall 2004 in its 20th annual Pegasys Awards ceremony February 11. Local public, governmental, and educational access programs on cable channels 13, 15, and 16 competed.

  • “Newswatch 16” (producer Michael Geller) won the Newscast/Magazine category. NewsWatch presents Tompkins County news live at 8:00pm on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • “Work in Progress” (producer Nathan Brown), which showcases student films and videos, won the Performing Arts category.
  • “The Solarium with Professor Smedley Drake,” a satire produced by Jesse Porter, and “Newswatch 16” were named Best Educational Access programs. Time Warner will enter them in the Hometown Video Festival, a national competition of the Alliance for Community Media.

First Place, Newscast - Newswatch 16 - newscast of November 20, 2003
The photo shows Fall 2003 news producer Michael Geller and news director John Cook receiving plaques from actors Faith Salie and Corbin Bernsen at the ballroom of the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel. The Newswatch episode was screened the following evening, along with other first place winners, at the Academy's theater.

About the College Emmy Award:

It's a first for Newswatch, and a first for Ithaca College. An ICTV production received first place honors at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 25th anniversary College Emmy Awards, March 28 in Hollywood. The competition, which honors student producers, awarded Fall 2003 news director John Cook and news producer Michael Geller $2000 in cash, $2000 in Kodak film product and most of the expenses to attend the awards gala. The November 20 newscast was entered by Eloise Greene. The newscast was screened in the Academy's theater the following evening, along with the first place winners in the seven other categories. This was the first year the Academy had a newscast category.

About the Associated Press Broadcasters Association Award:

NewsWatch 16 made ICTV history, as it became the first college television news program in New York to win an Associated Press award for best regularly scheduled local news program! ICTV and NewsWatch were placed in the Class 3 category, competing against other small market stations such as Binghamton, Elmira, Plattsburgh, and Utica. Jeff Saperstone '03, Peter Busa '05, Emily Riemer '03, and Adam Aurand '04, attended the banquet.

Jeff Saperstone, News Director for the winning November 14, 2002 newscast, said: "Towards the end of the night when our name was called up, there was an audible gasp in the crowd. People were genuinely surprised and congratulatory towards us. In fact many in the biz approached us after the ceremony and congratulated us in person."

Judges for the event told attendees, "We realize this may upset the upstate New York applecart, but these anchors are poised beyond their years. Creative stories, balanced anchors, good use of graphics, good newscast."

Congratulations to all who participated in the cast, and have worked hard to make NewsWatch 16 such an amazing program.
